How do I write a good content brief?

A good content brief gives your writer everything they need to nail your content first time, so the more detail you include, the better the result. Here's what to cover when you place your order.

What to include

  • A clear explanation of what the piece is about and its purpose (for example, a blog post that also needs to work as a sales tool)
  • The specific points or sections you'd like covered, plus any others you think the writer should add
  • Formatting preferences, such as H1 and H2 headers and a meta description
  • Examples of tone, showing how you'd like something phrased versus how you wouldn't
  • A suggested or desired title, or let our writers create one for you
  • Target keywords and any density preferences
  • Guidance on where keywords should appear, such as in the opening paragraph
  • Any external links to stats, facts, or reference articles you'd like included, ideally numbered so the writer knows exactly where to place them

You'll also need to fill in the required form fields for target audience, desired tone, and your company name or website. If you're ordering a Pro Blog Writing or Pro Website Copywriting project and want Surfer SEO optimisation, paste your Surfer SEO Content Creator Link into the project brief so the writer can aim for a strong content score.

A note on checking tools

We don't write to match specific third-party plugins. We use tools such as Grammarly and Copyscape, but most importantly, we write for humans, so the content is clear and easy to understand. External plugins look at different parameters and aren't always accurate, so it's best to review content from a human perspective first.

If something's not quite right

If the content doesn't match your brief, just use the 'Request Amendments' option in your dashboard once the project is complete. Add the specific changes you'd like and this goes straight back to the writer. Revisions are included across our content writing services.
